Convention Coverage brought to you by Big Oil???

(cross posted at kickin it with cg and Clintonistas for Obama)

In case anyone missed it, ExxonMobil will be sponsoring the CNN, CBS and the National Journal's coverage of both the Democratic and Republican National Conventions.

And just in the nick of time, the Exxon Mobile Citizen Action Team (CAT) issued its summer newsletter.

The ExxonMobil program that provides information on public policy issues and encourages employees and retirees in the United States and those citizens living abroad to get involved in issues that affect our business, families and communities. With nearly 100,000 U.S. employees and retirees providing representation in every congressional district, the ExxonMobil family is an important political force and a vehicle for positive change. By harnessing our collective strength, we can make a difference through the elections process, lobbying and grassroots communications.

Isn't it nice seeing a corporation take an active role in democracy?

strangely, the most common bumper sticker in florida is the sunoco sticker.  nice cars, run down cars, pick up trucks, company fleets -- they have a bunch of sunoco stickers out there...

In any case, (2.00 / 1)

my thoughts are currently occupied by "The perfect paella".

I studied this recipe in the wall street journal while on a red eye on Sunday... and my goal for this week has been to create that dish at home tomorrow.

The recipe can be found here

http://online.wsj.com/public/article/SB1 21823079662025493.html?mod=FoodandDrink5 2_1

I have a difficult problem to solve because we have a policy against eating snails, so I have to study the recipe and come up with an adequate replacement.

My wife, and my older daughter are mighty curious as to how this will turn out =)

Try mussels (2.00 / 2)

Or oysters. Much nicer than snails. I'd sautee/spice them before adding them to the paella.

Re: Try mussels (2.00 / 1)

well, I must thank you for the tip. Unfortunately, my wife vetoed that idea... some silly excuse about her getting sick the last 2 times I have cooked mussels (my explanations as to the source of the mussels did not impress her).

And so I ended up using shrimp and clams.

Unfortunately, it did not end up as the "perfect paella"... it was not even the best paella I have made, and nowhere as good as the best paella I have had.

I can't believe this I don't know why.
This is like a bad dream when the oil companies can just walk in like they own us. I guess they do.

Re: Convention Coverage .... Big Oil??? (2.00 / 3)

Wow, now they do something with all those record profits!

I thought they were supposed to be using those record profits to help find more resources for energy and developing more refining capacity.

I guess if you can't drill the public lands freely (even though you already have thousands of acres leased for that purpose), you drill the public discourse for a small pittance.

Hell's bells, even the GOP didn't have to crucify Eisenhower's record in order to make Reagan their 'saint'. We can have two great ones, you know?

You should see the Hospitality Suites....... (2.00 / 4)

that will be populating both conventions. Big oil, big pharma, big Ag, all will be there to provide necessary creature comforts for hard working convention delegates.

And to make sure that the "super-delegates"--most of whom are members of Congress--are well fed and nourished in Denver, a special section was written into the recent lobbying and ethics "reform" bill. Although it is illegal for them to accept a meal from a lobbyist (unless they're standing up...then it's OK), if they visit a corporate party or hospitality suite in their role as a convention delegate--as opposed to their role as an elected official--then that is perfectly legal and kosher. (I guess they just have to wear one of those ridiculous convention hats, or buttons, to legally make the change-over....)

Pretty sad, given that this Ethics Reform Bill is usually mentioned as the centerpiece accomplishment of the Pelosi/Ried Congress. Great to see democracy in action.
